Banana bread should be like my Grandmother's: tender, moist, banana-intense, racy with vanilla, homey, and comforting. (And it makes an easy breakfast when family is visiting for the holidays!)

The problem with my early attempts at vegan banana bread was the first wave of vegan butters and egg substitutes. They got points for trying but were definitely beta quality. Consequently, so were early iterations of my vegan banana bread. For years, I gave up trying. But thanks to new high-performing vegan products — and lots of old bananas — I’ve got a recipe as good as grandma’s, and plant based, too.

Did you save your pumpkin seeds from Halloween? I hope so because they have a wonderful place in the Thanksgiving kitchen and in this colorful salad that will brighten your day. This Seven Seed Quinoa With Spinach and Sesame Dressing is loaded with quinoa, bright green spinach, crunchy pumpkin seeds and sweet pomegranate. It's like a bit of sunshine on a plate.

This lavender lentil recipe has become a Thanksgiving staple at my house.
Culinary lavender is available at many gourmet stores and online. The rest comes together super-easily. Beluga lentils are fish-free but like their namesake, tiny, black and glossy. They hold their shape after cooking yet infuse beautifully with the herbs for a dish that’s satisfying, savory, umami, and of course vegan.

My husband’s #Tulane alumni event came just after the election. That meant I had 48 hours in New Orleans to absorb the new reality. Got to visit @trashydiva , my favorite boutique, have a tofu po’boy at @killerpoboys roasted squash at @bayonanola , see #emmylouharris in concert and then reenter real life.

there are no doubt rough days ahead, but as Louis Armstrong sang, I’m keeping my fingers crossed 🤞🏼.

Looking for a different way to serve sweet potatoes this Thanksgiving? Try African-American Sweet Potato and Peanut Stew. This stew contains peanuts, sweet potato and black-eyed peas, a triumvirate of nutrient-dense, delicious crops. Time does the work with this stew, the taste is lovely and complex. Pairs beautifully with rice or flatbread.

Fall gets me all in a dessert mood and desserts like this Chocolate Pecan Cranberry Coffee Cake from @goodcakesfran hold a wonderful place in a vegan diet. Cranberries, pecans, and oats are health-promoting foods, and I prefer them in this recipe. But feel free to use any combination of dried fruit and nuts you like. As a beach lover, my visual cue for the crumb, which needs to be moistened but not wet, is the consistency of damp sand.
